这是散文作者利用语言的多变性赋予句子一点诗意.他想说的是could be found(可能有也可能没有),但是这样说太枯燥,并且和前一句were beginning to wither没有呼应.写成were to be found,就和were beginning to wither并列起来,而且三个w (were,wither,were)给人一种韵感.一定不能写成were found(被发现了,即一定有,每片叶子下都有),那样恐怕不符合事实,并且一点诗意也没有了.
